Death Takes Two Holidays

Some of the prettiest parks around Shanghai are rarely used but for two events a year: Memorial Day and QingMing (Tomb Sweeping) Festival. This is one of them. A cemetery located in the Qingpu District (which I found to be a beautiful, quickly developing part of Shanghai) just on the edge of that district. And far away from any significant population. Why? Because many Chinese, especially the older generation, are dreadfully afraid of the dead. Which is really a pity that a park like this is only visited either when someone dies, or during those two specific holidays. The entrance Continue Reading →

Shanghai Funeral

About a month ago a relative of my wife’s died. It was a while coming as she was elderly, had been in poor health and barely mobile. So while very sad, it was not unexpected. I had met her and her family a few times and wanted to attend to give my respects to her and her family. I was also a little curious just how Chinese (Shanghai) funerals were conducted. Compare and Contrast While the underlying objective is the same: pay respects to the deceased and her family, the process was interestingly different. Nietzsche Juice

Happy Anniversary!!!

Today is our wonderful 9th Wedding Anniversary!!! So, with a dozen beautiful fresh red roses, I took my lovely wife out to dinner. We went to a little new Taiwanese Hot Pot restaurant called “Gong Bao”. It’s nestled under the steps of the Shanghai Stadium right outside of CenturyMart convenience store. We had a wonderful dinner. Just the two of us. And the restaurant was very clean and professional – although they did have problems keeping the place cool with it being 95 outside and all the hot pots boiling away inside. Anyway, thought we’d share!
